With spring around the corner, the Friends of Shannon Cemetery are looking forward to restoring the headstones to their original resting places. Much hard work, research and dedication has gone into this undertaking. We are now asking for donations to help with the cost of supplies for repairing, restoring and resetting the Shannon Cemetery headstones. All funds leftover, after the stones are reset, will be earmarked for future maintenance and restoration of any stone located belonging in Shannon.
If you would like to donate to our cause we have set up two options.

Shannon Cemetery is a historic pioneer cemetery located in Bluffton, Ohio and is the final resting place of many of the village's founding fathers, including Revolutionary War veteran Joseph DeFord and Civil War veterans Samuel and William Hipsher. Other documented surnames of the deceased now laying in unmarked graves in Shannon Cemetery include Battels, Berry, Bryan, Clifford, Collins, Connell, Dearth, Drumm, Dunlap, Elder, Ewing, Fenton, Fitzgerald, Gardner, Gaskill, Goble, Gutman, Huber, Iden, Long, McHenry, Murray, Owens, Stratton & Wilson.
Currently, all of the tombstones have been removed from the cemetery by a sanctioned volunteer agent of the village of Bluffton, as plans continue to turn this area into a park. Initial plans by the developer indicate there may be a gazebo, walking paths, rain garden and a parking lot installed at "Shannon Cemetery Park", while the tombstones that have been removed will be placed together on some sort of concrete pad at the site, rather than returned to the individual graves from which they were removed.
The goal of the Friends of Shannon Cemetery committee is to preserve, restore, protect and memorialize Shannon Cemetery now and for future generations. Help us repair the damage done & restore and return the headstones back to the graves to which they belong.
If anyone has photos of the cemetery, gravestones, pioneers known to be buried there, gravestone etchings or rubbings, or family history or genealogy related to Shannon Cemetery please feel free to reach out to us through our contact link at the top of this page. Any and all information would be appreciated. We would be honored to see anything you may have and add to the history of Shannon Cemetery.
