On January 6, 2016 the Village of Bluffton hired Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. out of Toledo, Ohio to complete a Ground Penetrating Radar Scan at Shannon Cemetery with donated money. About seven-eights of the cemetery was scanned on this day. The remaining northwest corner of the cemetery will be scanned at a later date, due to a previous time commitment by the scanning company. A total of 65 voids in the earth were found and based on the location of the voids, many and most are graves. The cemetery now has 65 stakes in the ground marking these graves. These stakes were placed in the middle of each void located. All voids are not the same size. They may not look like they line up as the cemetery was laid out at an angle, North to South. Gravestone replacement on graves would be aligned to allow easy mowing and maintenance. Rows can be reestablished and graves located based on this G.P.R. scan and a G.P.S. reading of stones from an aerial mapping done by a friend of Save Shannon Cemetery. It is the plan of Friends of Save Shannon Cemetery to have the position of these stakes surveyed and mapped. Using G.P.R., G.P.S., mapping technology, research, a cemetery conservationist and common sense, the 27 stones that were removed from the cemetery can then be replaced on their known graves.
On January 28, 2016, G.P.R.S. Inc finished the Shannon Cemetery scan for the village. Seven additional graves were found and marked, bringing the total to 72.
